June 9:  Beta Canada Trial, Ioco, BC.

The ninth day of June 2024 started out cloudy but cleared up quickly for a perfect day to ride in the Beta Canada Trial at Ioco. Thirty seven riders took on some challenging or tricky sections with some high scores along the way.  The Intermediate riders were particularly challenged with tight corners that rewarded good balance and precise steering.  The Expert class was owned by Alex Le who took half the points of his nearest competitor.  Jason Miller snuck up from the USA to take Advanced and Paul Marander had the best overall Advanced score to win Senior Advanced.   Emily and Catrina battled it out in the all girl Intermediate Classl and were still smiling at the end of the day.  The very competitive old guys in the Senior Intermediate class had a surprising number of dabs and a very good time, with Peter Falk taking the no.1 plaque back to Vancouver Island.

Our thanks to Beta Canada for their kind sponsorship and thanks to Greg and Bernard for all their work.

May 26:  Whistler Trial, (Sticks and Stones) Whistler, BC

It looked like a gloomy day in May for the CPTA Whistler trial on May 26, 2024, but 44 riders showed up for the ride.  The rain never really materialized and conditions were consistent all day.  The last trial that I went to in Whistler was 1981 (I think) so it was great to get back there and ride where I have never ridden before.  It looks like the Experts were having a hard time finding cleans but it was a little easier on the other classes.  Alex Le won Expert handily and Brian McNeal downshifted to ride Advanced for the win.  Intermediate was the massive class with Shawn Steinbarhen topping the bunch and Billy D in Senior Intermediate had the best Intermediate score of the day.    Don Doerksen

Spring has arrived and the CPTA is off to a busy start.  With Small Wheel Trials, Women’s Trials, Prospect Camps, Classic Trials and Women’s Extravaganza to complement our Club Championship Series there is lots going on for our members.  This year we have two non-points events hosted by Ross Rathbone in Magna Bay for those that would enjoy a weekend getaway.   Check out the schedule page.

Event News:

February 24/25 Ladies Prospect Trials:

Christy Williams Richards hosted a two day women only two day event.  It is great to see our sport attracting a diverse membership and the development of our female riders is quite amazing.

March 17:  TRS Motorcycles Canada Trial, Ioco, BC.

If you were at Ioco for the 7th annual TRS Motorcycles Canada Trial on March 17, you probably thought that winter was long gone. Blue skies and twenty degrees were the order of the day. The rapidly drying conditions made for lots of traction and lower than expected scores. Basically, it was perfect for our first full trial of the year and 47 riders showed up to enjoy it. A few riders tried out the Advanced class for the first time and this was a great day for that.

Sean Bird took a five on the first loop and only 1 point after that to clinch a close race for the win.   Sam Minchington and Andrew Deboer took Advanced and Senior Advanced, respectively,  with very miserly rides. Willy Westwood won Intermediate and Roy Anderson won Senior Intermediate with lots of competitors in that class. Andrew Keleher was best in Junior and Pierce McNeal rode a twin shock Yamaha to be best in Sportsman.

You can find the results on our results page or click here

Our thanks to TRS Motorcycles Canada for continuing to sponsor this event and the CPTA.  Don Doerksen

Spring Classic Trial

April 7th was a great day to take out your old twinshock trials bike and see if you still remember how to ride it.  It was the Spring Classic at Ioco, BC.  The weather did not cooperate as the rain stopped before we started riding, so that part was not classic. Sean Bird set the trial out and then took off to Australia so we could not yell at him. Peirce McNeal cleaned the last loop on a TY250 with a 360 motor in it, so the sections were not too bad. Bob Clark won Classic B and BillyD (83 yr) proved that old still works by topping the Senior Intermediate class, Kevlar Dupuis won Intermediate and Fei Wang took Junior. It was a good days riding and it is always a pleasure to see the old iron doing what they were intended for.

TWO EVENTS on MARCH 3!

Spring Small Wheel Trial: March 3 at Ioco, BC

Ted Blow is the host and has set up easy, fun sections for the kids.  If you want to help out Ted is looking for checkers and someone to man the barbecue.  Hot dogs and pops are on the menu.

Spring Women’s Trial: March 3 at Ioco, BC

Back to back fun for Women at Ioco.  Following a successful (although a bit damp) two-day prospect camp hosted by Christy, Jaclyn Delacroix is hosting her Spring Women’s Trial at Ioco.  Ladies, do not miss out on this event.  Enjoy competition at its best with sections to challenge both Junior and Intermediate level riders.

Everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy the day.  You can help with the kids or check out the action with the Women’s Trial.  It’s impressive how quickly our ladies are advancing.   Bring along a few dollars to donate to the barbecue.  Free for participants and helpers!

Hello ladies!

THIS IS HAPPENING!!!

Feb 24-25 weekend I am Clerk of the Course for a two day competition for ladies in the Junior and Intermediate classes.  (There won’t be a novice line, and there may be a few sections with splits that are harder than intermediate to spice things up).  There will be 7 sections ridden for 4 loops.  The same loop will be ridden both days (mostly), but the sections will be new for each day.  You can ride one or both days; the events are not part of a championship, and do not count for CPTA points.  Sign up each day.  (Let me know if you can or can’t make it by reply… I’d like to have an idea of numbers.)

The event will be held at ioco, in Port Moody.  (Map on the website, www.trialsbc.com.  If you haven’t been, ioco is AMAZING).  Standard CPTA rules and procedures will run this event.  Event will be group check scoring.  Sign up at 9:30 am, riders meeting at 10am.  Event entry is $20, non-member is $30.  2024 memberships are in place, I’ll likely be able to sign up new members.  No camping at the event, unfortunately.

One goal of this competition is for ladies who are interested in the TdN (this coming year or future years) to be able to compete against each other head to head.  Riding this event is not required for the TdN, but the committee does consider head to head results in team selection.  We are also trying to make a TdN program where we can follow lady riders and watch for up and coming team members in lower classes.  Interest in the TdN is not required for this event; another goal is to encourage and level up women’s trials in Canada, and competition is a large part of that, regardless of the TdN.  The more women who compete, the more the level of skill will increase.  Following that idea, riders from all over (ie: not Canada) will also be welcome… come and be awesome!

There will not be a novice line at this event.  However, if you are a novice, and enjoy a trail ride, the loop is not long, and covers mostly the CPTA Junior loop and small wheel loop.  It might be nice to come and see what is up, add to the stoke, and meet some fellow lady riders.  The March 3 Ladies Trial will have a Novice line, for those who want to test their newer skills and have a good time; it will be a one day event.  The May 4-5 Extravaganza is open for all skill levels (as long as you have about 3 rides on the bike… I haven’t nailed down a very beginner instructor for never-ridden-before ladies, but I’m looking).  The Extravaganza will have all sorts of activities taking place… skills clinics and trail rides and a mini competition (possibly a team competition!) and prizes and fun; you will be able to sign up for one or both days.

Let me know if you have any questions about this event (or any event), or even let me know if you are or aren’t able to make it.  I’d like to have an idea of who is coming, and I haven’t heard from many of you in a while, so just say hi!

Thanks, Christy

CPTA Memorial Trial, November 19, 2023.  Ioco, BC.

The CPTA held the Memorial Trial on November 19th, 2023 at Ioco, B.C.  Forty three riders showed up on what turned out to be a perfect day to ride. There was just the gentlest sprinkle during the riders meeting and then it was cool and dry for the rest of the day. The sections were set on the easy side (which is wise in November) and a number of clean loops were recorded, but it was sloppy enough to take some points off everyone.  Jesse McDowall took Expert quite handily and Sawyer Collie followed that lead in Advanced.  The 2 Senior classes went to Andrew Deboer in Senior Advanced and Roy Anderson in Senior Intermediate, where a few points made quite a difference.  Jaclyn Delacroix showed the Intermediates what they are supposed to do and Chessy Knight finally showed up again to lead the Junior class. Thanks to Mountain Motorcycle for their kind sponsorship of a really good day’s riding.

CPTA Uhuru Trial, October 15, 2023, Ioco, BC.

Forty riders showed up to ride the Uhuru trial at Ioco on October 15th, 2023.   A warm, if muggy, day greeted the riders with wet conditions from the rain the night before.  After riding through the dry summer, some adjustment was needed to ride this trial.

Alex Le won the Expert class for the first time and Sawyer Collie topped a large Advanced class. Andrew DeBoer was awesome in Senior Advanced with only 9 points for the day. Bill deGaris only took 3 points in Senior Intermediate and Bobby Shantz took only 7 points to win Intermediate.  Lyndsey Needham had 3 consistent laps in Junior and Bob Clark was best in Sportsman by 1 point.

Our thanks to Dave at Moto Trials West for their kind sponsorship of this event.  Don Doerksen

CPTA Team Squid Outlaw Trial, April 23, 2023, Ioco, BC.

The 2023 edition of the Outlaw Trial took place on April 23rd at Ioco, BC.  The day dawned cool and cloudy but dry for the 26 riders that came out to play. The Expert and Advanced riders had 14 sections and two loops with the last 4 sections supplying most of the points. Sean Bird won Expert handily by only taking points on the last 2 sections.  Andrew deBoer was the runaway winner in Senior Advanced while Jason Miller had a tighter contest in Advanced.   Dave Fair snuck over from Vancouver Island to win Senior Intermediate by a 1 point margin while Rob Heagle had a little more breathing room to win Intermediate.

Our thanks to Dave Rhodes at Outlaw Accessories and Trialsport for his kind support of this event.

Expert winner Sean showing some style.

CPTA Spring Classic Trial,  April 2, 2023, Ioco, BC.

A brisk spring day greeted 29 riders for the Spring Classic Trial on April 2, 2023 at Ioco.  Eleven riders showed up with some interesting old bikes for the vintage classes and there was even a pristine collection on display.  When we drag out the old bikes there are bound to be problems. The day was made interesting by a leaking gas tank(JB Weld and tape) and 2 flat tires on another bike.  We tried to handicap Sean Bird by putting him on a 230 lb. Honda TL250 but he rode it like a rental and did not take a dab all day.  Classic B was also a clean sweep for Bob Clark on the SWM.

Jason Miller and Dan Donnelly won Intermediate and Senior Intermediate with identical 4 point scores.  Lyndsey Needham won Junior handily when the other 2 Juniors ran out of time and punched 5’s for the last lap. The rain started about when we finished so it was great weather on a good day.  Don Doerksen

Forces des Femmes

CPTA First Ever Women’s Only Trial March 19, 2023,  Ioco, BC.

The first ever Ladies only trial was held at Ioco, BC on March 19, 2023.

Called the Forces De Femme, it brought out an eager group to enjoy a mostly sunny ride with some coaching thrown in for good measure. Few of the ladies had ridden an actual trial before so there was lots to learn about section markers, lines, rules and how to have fun doing it. Scores mostly got better as some lessons were learned. Intermediate and Junior lines were laid out. Karaleen Gioia was best on the Intermediate line with a clean middle loop and Amanda Porsild had a good ride in Junior  with only 5 points lost for the day.

CPTA TRS Trial,  March 12, 2023, Ioco, BC.

The CPTA TRS Trial at Ioco took place on a fresh springlike day on March 12. Thirty seven riders showed up to ride and the rain held off until we were about finished. The Advanced/Expert loop had just the right amount of challenge for riders that had not ridden a trial for some months.

Sean Bird just squeaked a win by one point in Expert while Paul Marander won Advanced in his first attempt with a really steady clean last loop.  Ted McDowall took 4 points to take Senior Advanced by one point.

The Junior/Intermediate loop looked to take a fair scattering of points with a kicker at section 10 that did not see a clean all day on the Intermediate line.  Bobby Shantz was well clear to take Intermediate and Roy Anderson had it a little tighter in Senior/Intermediate.  Bob Clark is still showing the way in Sportsman and Lyndsey Needham was the last woman standing in Juniors. I had to use the windshield wipers all the way home but I was smiling after a great day’s ride.

Thanks to Mountain Motorcycle for their kind sponsorship as the importers of TRS motorcycles in Canada.  Don Doerksen

CPTA Memorial Trial,  November 20, 2022, Ioco, BC.

A cool but dry fall day welcomed 35 riders on November 20,2022 to the CPTA Memorial Trial at Ioco.  Great conditions made for some low scores but also some nervous rides as a few tight scores had to be settled on cleans. It was great to see a number of ladies come out and to see that most of them had attended the ladies weekend in October.  Sean Bird tried to make it an easier trial for the Experts but it looks like it was only easier for him.  Guy Smeeth hardly put a foot wrong all day in Senior 45 and Jason Miller took the Advanced class.  Kole Heidner improved each loop to take Intermediate and Jack Hillman continues to be the one to beat in Junior.  Our thanks to Mountain Motorcycle for their kind sponsorship and continued support of our trials community.    Don Doerksen

CPTA  2022  CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS.  October 29, 30.  Ioco, BC.

The Club hosted a very successful Canadian National Championship two day event at Ioco on the last weekend of October.  With very dry fall conditions in BC, things changed dramatically the week prior to the event with rain and cooler temperatures prevailing.  Day One remained mostly dry providing nice conditions but Day Two turned out extremely wet which increased the difficulty for all riders.

The CMA will announce the overall results but here are the results of the two events comprising this year’s Championship series.

CPTA Fall Classic, October 2, 2022, Ioco, BC

An interesting classic collection showed up for the CPTA Fall Classic Trial on October 2nd at Ioco…..And there were some interesting classic bikes too! Twenty one riders came out on an amazingly sunny and hot day to ride 10 deceptively simple looking sections.  Stan Bakgaard was not deceived and rode very well to part with only 4 marks and win Classic A on the Majesty.  Mike Lynnes squeaked out the Classic B win on a borrowed Honda TL250 with 1 point lost and furthest clean.  BillyD dabbed twice all day to win Senior Intermediate and Bernardo took 1 more to win Intermediate. Tom Kuezmeiowski was low score in Sportsman to win handily.

Iron Mountain Trial, September 18, 2022, Mission, BC

For the first time in many years a perfectly temperate and sunny day greeted the riders of the Iron Mountain Trial.  An almost overwhelming fifty-five riders signed up for the September 18th trial in Mission B.C.  Twelve riders were in the small wheel class that was bravely shepherded by Slav, who also arranged for some great trophies and giveaways for the kids. Our thanks to Fraser Valley Fishing Addicts for their donation for the small wheel class and International Motorsports for the giveaways. With some of our Experts in Italy, it was left to Travis Kyper to top the Expert Class with only 16 points for the day. Jorge Gonzalez visited from Mexico and was the best in Advanced on a borrowed bike. Paul Marander won Intermediate in his first attempt at trials and Jason Imakire dropped 21 points to win in Junior.  Senior Intermediate was a tight contest with only 4 points separating the top 3 with Patrick Skinner coming out on top. The Small Wheel class was won handily by Daniel Tretiakov with only 6 for a total.  Don Doerksen

99 Trials Squamish Trial, May 15, 2022, Squamish, BC

The Squamish trial came back after a 2 year absence and was held on May 15th at Crumpit Woods.  This was a  joint effort of the 99 Trials Association and the CPTA.  The trial brought out a host of local riders to test their skills in organized competition. The day long rain made some sections quite demanding and the scores reflected that.

Sean Bird’s ride to win Expert was phenomenal, Guy Smeeth did very well to finish 3 loops with such good scores in Senior 45 and AJ Taylor was only 2 points better than Melissa to win Advanced.  Adam Pereira was the best of the 12 Intermediate riders and Dave Fair was top in Senioe Intermediate and Jack Hillman came all the way from Mission to win Junior.  Bob Clark took Sportsman.

On an interesting side note, Melissa was saying that it would be nice if the rain would stop.  I said it would but only on our way home, so just before I got home I looked up and there was a beautiful double rainbow.  So the sun was shining somewhere!

Our thanks to the 99 Trials Association and all the volunteers that made it another good day to visit Squamish.

Outlaw Trial, April 24, 2022, Ioco, BC.

April 24th dawned bright and beautiful for the trial at Ioco, BC, and 31 riders showed up for the Outlaw Trial sponsored by Outlaw Accessories and Trialsport. The flu/covid going around did affect the attendance and some riders felt they were not up to par yet. The sunshine made for perfect conditions which was much appreciated by the Advanced and Expert riders as some of their sections proved to be quite difficult. Greg Down apparently had “Crash of the Day’ but he hung on to finish the day. Intermediate and Junior sections rewarded a steady hand and calm nerves as it was easy to drop a few places with just a few dabs.

Sean Bird took Expert handily with his normal competition absent. Aaron Fisher came over from the Island and rode a borrowed bike to win Advanced and Carl Muller hung on to win Senior Advanced.  Tom Hillman and Sean Grant were the only finishers in Intermediate and Junior and Bob Clark was hot in Sportsman. The hotly contested Senior Intermediate class brought out one somewhat improved Honda TL125 that Don Doerksen used to good effect.

Unfortunately, Dave Rhodes could not make it to his event this year but we thank him for his kind sponsorship and many years of promoting trials in Canada.

Spring Classic, April 10, 2022, Ioco, BC.

April 10th dawned with gray skies but no rain as the CPTA put on the Spring Classic Trial at Ioco. Twenty two riders came out to ride, nine of them on vintage bikes. The old bikes rode with no-stop rules but the others were the regular stop allowed. The rooted turn around the tree at section 9 seemed to take the most points from both classic and modern riders that faced it. Sawyer Collie on a TL125 was the most parsimonious with points in Classic A and Bob Clark only dabbed twice all day to top Classic B on the SWM. Braydon Collie took Intermediate by one point and the very vintage Ted Blow topped the Senior Intermediate class. Jack Hillman won Junior and our exhibition class guys found some places to throw away points.

TRS Moto Canada Trial, March 20, 2022, Ioco, BC.

It was the first day of spring and time for the TRS trial at Ioco, B.C. We always hope for the “big white fluffy clouds between sunshine” kind of spring day. That was not to be, as the rain just kept coming all day and gave us a real TRIAL.  Which means that some parts got washed and better but most parts just got more entertaining.  It was very tight in the Expert class with Alex Walton topping Sean Bird by 2 points.  Advanced was even tighter with Cam and Ian tied on 16 points and Cam Collie taking it on more cleans.  Ted McDowall was one point less to take Senior Advanced.  Ted Blow had a very good ride to win Senior Intermediate and Kole Heibner took Intermediate.  Bob Clark tried to show that it was not that hard in Sportsman class and Emily Down took a survivors’ win in Juniors. Next up is the Spring Classic on April 10/22.  Clean the rust off that old iron and start practising!

Memorial Trial, November 14, 2021, Ioco, BC

A very gray and soggy day greeted the participants at the Memorial Trial on Nov. 14/21 at Ioco, B.C.  The rain did not stop all day and a lot of scores got worse on the 2nd loop. It was very close in the Expert class after the first loop but Sean Bird held on to take the win by a healthy margin. Alex Le was one of the few to improve on the 2 loop as he took Adv. by 4 points. Bob Clark must have nailed his feet to the pegs as he only took 2 points in 30 sections to win Snr. Int.  Kole Hebner was the sole entrant in Int and the 2 people that signed up for Junior look to have been washed away. That is a wrap for the CPTA season but hopefully we will be having a Boxing Day fun trial before 2022 shows up.  – Don Doerksen

Uhuru Trial, October 24, 2021, Ioco, BC

The Uhuru Trial happened on Oct. 24/21 at Ioco, B.C. Uhuru is a Swahili word that we got courtesy of Bill deGaris who turned 80 recently and got 2nd in Snr. 45!! Uhuru means “freedom”. So doff those masks and let’s ride! Twenty nine riders showed up on a day that started dry and ended up wet. That did not affect things too much as scores seemed to get better as the day went on. Sean Bird took only 2 dabs to win Expert by 3 points and Andrew deBoer had the same point spread to win Advanced. Jody Wall topped Int. and Skip Parker handily won Snr. Int.  Steve Eremenko took Sportsman as the day dried out at the end and I even saw the sun on the way home. – Don Doerksen

Iron Mountain Trial, September 19, 2021:

Iron Mountain in Mission was the venue for a good trial put on by the CPTA on Sept. 19/21. The rain had returned after 3 dry months so dust was not a problem! Twenty seven riders showed up and enjoyed a day with only a brief shower to keep things cool. The battle in the Expert class was tight with Sean Bird coming out on top by 4 points. Alex Le was riding very well to be the clear winner in Advanced and Skip Parker took Snr. Int. by a wide margin. Greg Buckmaster came out for the first time in a long time to win Int. and Jack Hillman is proving to be the guy to beat in Junior. Thanks to Skip for adding up the cards on the day and thanks to the City of Mission for the use of their tree farm.   Don Doerksen

Three Events for your September Calendar:

With the return of some very welcome rain the fire hazard has been greatly reduced.   The club is resuming competition in September with three events:

  1. September 19th is our annual Iron Mountain Trial in Mission, BC.  Don Doerksen is the host and the venue has proven to provide plenty of challenges for all classes.
  2. September 26th offers the return of Small Wheel Trials to Ioco. It will be a fun day with lots going on for everyone.  Beginners and Small Wheel riders kick things off at 10 AM.   There will be a short course with about 6 sections.   There will be checkers to keep score.  Beginners on full size trials bikes are welcome to join in.
  3.  September 26th afternoon will be our Fall Classic Trial. Combined with the Small Wheel event in the morning will be the Fall Classic Trial in the afternoon.  Guy Smeeth promises a short, fun course.   There will be both A and B classes for the vintage bikes and Junior, Intermediate and Sportsmen can join in the fun on modern trials bikes.  for results click here

It will be great to get back to riding events and enjoying the camaraderie but please remember to be responsible and follow provincial health guidelines.

UPDATE:

Last year we received notice of the termination of our land use agreement with Metro Vancouver Regional Parks.  Below is the original posting.

Future changes to riding in Belcarra Park:

On Tuesday April 28, 2020 CPTA Executive members Guy Smeeth (President), Ted McDowall (Treasurer) and David Cameron (Director of Sustainability) met by voice conferencing as requested with Mike Redpath (Head of Metro Vancouver Parks) and Steven Schaffrick (Head of the Central Region of Metro Parks) to discuss the current and future use of the Belcarra Park lands.

It was announced that Metro Parks is terminating the lease with CPTA effective February 28, 2022. This means we will have use of the Park land for another 22 months as of this date, after which we must vacate the area and neither ride or hold events in Belcarra Park lands.

It was directed that effective immediately no further trail building or maintenance is to be performed in the Park.

A committee has prepared a response to Metro Vancouver Board members which is going through final edits and executive review.  We will provide an update to how our submission is received by the board.

The committee was formed and spent many hours composing a response to Metro Vancouver Parks.   The new club Executive Committee has focused on this with weekly meetings and a commitment to do our best to reverse this decision.  Our rebuttal was submitted to MVP and we are waiting for an official response.  We have also presented our grave concerns at the last MVP Committee meeting.   It is a difficult battle as they turn deaf ears to our demand for a fair and transparent process in determining our future use of Belcarra Regional Park lands.   The decision was made behind closed doors (meaning the public was excluded) and based on a questionably biased internal report by MVP staff.  No author(s), no names attached and no third party unbiased input.

Recently, our President, Pierce McNeal, sent an open letter to MV Parks director Mike Redpath.  You can see the letter in the link below.

The Club has been thoughtful and courteous in our outreach to Metro Parks but it’s time to escalate our efforts.  We are exploring every avenue to make MV Parks to come to the table and engage in a  fair, unbiased dialogue about shared use of lands that the Canada Pacific Trials Association has shared with the community for 50 years.  Please remain good stewards of all our riding area and respect all visitors.

The CPTA D-Day Trial.  June 6, 2021, Ioco, BC.

June 6, 2021 was a good day to remember a famous invasion and a good day to get wet at the CPTA D-Day trial. Almost 50 riders showed up in spite of the rain and finally got to compete again. It was raining steadily at the start but settled down to a drizzle and a drip for the majority of the day. That did not seem to dampen the enthusiasm for the riding. All classes had lots of riders and there were a few people riding their first trial. Sean Bird was magic in Expert losing only 6 marks and Andrew deBoer took Advanced with 25 points. Carl Muller won Senior 45 and and Cam Collie took the Senior Intermediate win while Skip Parker was the best in Sportsman. Sebastion Wandler borrowed a bike and snuck a win in the Junior class by 2 points.    Don Doerksen

2020 News

The 2020 Moto Trials West Uhuru Trial, Ioco, BC, Oct. 18/20

Thirty one riders participated under cloudy skies but no rain. Second loop scores got worse for a number of riders as the wet ground got a little sloppy in places. Stan Bakgaard was a notable exception though as he did vastly better. The Int/Jr scores looked really good as Brian tried to lay it out easy to get people back into riding in this interesting year.

Alex Walton hardly put a foot down to handily win Expert and Carl Muller had an awesome 2 point final loop to lead Advanced. Cam Collie and Guy Smeeth took the Senior classes and Starla Smeeth had 3 consistent loops to win Int. Bob Clark completely forgot to put a foot down all day in Sportsman and Matthew Glade showed up after many years away to win Junior.  Congrats to our one Beginner Elton Puglisi for finishing his first trial.  Our thanks to Moto Trials West for sponsoring this great event  .Don Doerksen

The Honda Centre Fall Classic Trial, Ioco, BC, Oct. 4/20

Near perfect fall weather greeted participants in the Fall Classic trial at Ioco, B.C. on Oct. 4/ 20.  A thin cloud cover but no rain meant the traction was as good as it gets. There were 10 sections ranging in difficulty from “I can do that” to ” Darn that didn’t go very well”. Those on classic bikes rode non-stop rules which is always an interesting one to call and made for some quick 5’s.

Stan Bakgaard only took 2 points all day on the “new” to him KT250 to win Classic A. Honorable mention should go out to Sawyer Collie. He got on the TL250 for the first time after the riders meeting and went out and cleaned the first loop, ending up 2nd on the day. Two points was all that Bob Clark dropped in Classic B and Greg Down was the best in Sen.Int.  Jack Striker won Intermediate, Brett Clark won Sportsman and Jack Hillman got his first win in Junior.

Our thanks to the Honda Centre for sponsoring a great day and to Guy Smeeth for all his work in putting it on.   Don Doerksen

The Iron Mountain Trial, Mission, B.C. Sept. 20/20.

It was only the 2nd trial of the year for the CPTA and it was supposed to be a little easier. I guess some of us were rustier than we thought as the scores mounted up. At least you could not blame the rain for the rust as it did not rain for the first time in 3 years at this trial.

One of the exciting hazards that turned up was a wasp nest in section 5 for the Jun/Int. One dog and a few people did not enjoy that discovery. There were 7 Juniors that signed up; 6 of whom had never ridden a trial before. Thanks to Peter Capstick for leading them around and introducing them to our sport.

Sean Bird won Expert over a broken footed Alex Walton, Carl Muller and Cam Collie both got 32 points to win Adv. and Sen 45. Starla Smeeth was queen of Int. and Sebastion Van Dyck squeaked out the Jun. win by 2 cleans. Mike Lynnes came all the way from 150 Mile House to lead the Sen Int and Adam Balasz was best in Sportsman.

Thanks to Sean Bird for 3 hours clearing the parking lot with the defective brushcutter that I gave him. Now drag out that old trials bike mouldering in the shed. The Fall Classic is next on Oct. 4/20 for twin shock bikes and Jun and Int riders on modern bikes. See you there……….Don Doerksen

TRS Moto Canada Trial, March 15, 2020, Ioco, BC

The weather could not have been any better for the TRS trial at Ioco on March 15. Forty riders showed up to cool and sunny conditions that were great. There was a bit of ice hiding in the shade but traction was very good. Bernard maybe had the crash of the day when he found some ice on a rock face, got to spinning and then got back on the rock. This was on the loop, not a section, but he launched the bike off into the bushes.

The top two experts hardly put a foot down and Alex Walton got a 4 point win with a clean last loop. Todd Nordin topped Kylee Sweeten in Expert Support and Ted McDowall only took 2 points all day to embarrass the rest of us in Senior 45. Carl Muller just beat Melissa Andrist in Advanced.  These girls are sneaking up on us. I love it.

Intermediates took a lot of dabs but Tim Wright came out on top there. Mike Hays must have glued his feet to the pegs in Senior Intermediate and Brett Clark had a good ride in Sportsman. There was a wide range of scores in Junior and Adam Balazs was the runaway winner…….Don Doerksen……Pictures by Jeff Green

Round 1, Small Wheel Series, March 8, 2020, Ioco, BC

The Small Wheel Trials Series kicked off on a beautiful spring day at Ioco.  Organizer Pierce McNeal, who proposed reinstating a Small Wheel Series to the club last year, did a wonderful job of setting up a course with some fairly easy sections and some that presented a few challenges.   Most sections had both an A and B line providing for riders of all skill levels.  Rob Shantz, provided amazing, custom aluminum wall plaques for all finishers.

Event morning arrived and so did 17 kids along with parents and grandparents.  It was great to see such a solid turnout and it speaks positively to the future of our sport.  Ian Carlson put on his chef’s hat and served up hotdogs to everyone attending.

Thanks to Pierce McNeal for his vision and hard work putting on this series and to all those that stepped up to help make it a success and a special thanks to all the kids and families who participated.

Beta Trial, February 9, 2020, Ioco, BC

A crisp, clear day was the setting for the Beta Canada trial on Feb. 9/20 at Ioco, B.C. The cool but dry weather made for a very enjoyable day after a week of rain. Thirty seven riders came out of winter hibernation to ride 3 short loops of 10 sections. The McDowall family put on the Advanced/Expert and Bob Clark led a committee to do the Junior/Intermediate sections.

Alex Walton led the Experts and the Exp-Support class jumped back into existence to be won by Todd Nordin. Carl Muller was best in Adv. and Don Doerksen was close behind to win Sen45. Brian Dye was the clear winner in Int. and Mike Hays came over from the Island to lead Sen. Int.

Emily Jarmin came from Squamish to ride her first trial in Junior and was shepherded by the very experienced Bill Thompson and Brett Clark to make her day special.

Our thanks to Beta Canada for their support and our next trial is March 15th. See you there!
